Otliensians renew Dutch friendships,

A group of 25 Otliensians enjoyed a long weekend in Holland both from social and rugby aspects. Following a free day on Friday, they had games arranged against friends of some 20 years standing in the Smugglers at IJmuiden on Saturday and Haarlem on Sunday.
At the Smugglers the game was also timed to coincide with the opening of their new clubhouse and the home side had worked late throughout the previous week to have the facility ready.

The Otliensians in true touring spirit played some backs in the forwards and vice-versa for the opening period. The home side were first to score via their fleet-footed Australian centre but Matthew Payne equalised following a tap penalty after 15 minutes.
The Smugglers scored two further tries following an attempted scissors by Otliensians and then their centre scored a second try after quick handling from the line-out to give the home side the 15-5 lead at the break.

At half-time Otliensians re-grouped and with `Mesher' Smith coming on for
the injured Elliott Dawson. Smugglers extended their lead early in the half
but centre Martin Gray, a former regular Otliensian, showed flashes of his
old brilliance to score with Steve Hammond converting.

The determined running of Aidie Fawell in the centre was sparking off some lively attacks but it was Simon Coates who scored a try which he converted following good approach work by Peter Gillson. Veteran Tony Waye, playing his first game for two years was working hard in the loose and with ten minutes remaining Steve Lofthouse was rewarded with a try after some direct running to give the visitors a close run victory by 24-22. Coates was named Man-of-the-Match.

After the game the Club President and match referee, Adrian Normanton, and Tour Captain, Peter Gillson, presented the Smugglers with tour souvenirs and a framed print of Otley. Leo van der Plas reciprocated for the home side and gifts included a fire hose from the old clubhouse, suitably enscribed.

The fixing of this safely in the Otliensians' clubroom will certainly test
the ingenuity of Chairman Norman Coates. An excellent social followed the game where old acquaintances were renewed.

The late morning kick-off at Haarlem saw Otliensians, augmented by three
players from Smugglers, set off playing running rugby at a good pace.
Hammond, Fawell and two players from Smugglers, all crossed for tries with Haarlem replying with three scores, giving the visitors a narrow lead of 15-22 at the break.

In the second-half Haarlem soon drew level with a converted try but the
strong mid-field running of the Otliensians was creating problems. `Mesher' Smith came on at the break and he and Aidie Fawell both ran in tries from long range. Haarlem reduced the arrears with a converted try but Hammond's jinking run increased the lead and the unsuspected pace of Smith gave Otliensians a further seven points.

Later in the game an attempted drop goal by Coates set up a converted try for a guest Smuggler and the same player added the final seven points to give the visitors a 58-36 victory.

The enjoyable game was again followed by post match presentations before Otliensians began the journey back to the UK.
Club Members were most appreciative of the efforts of Adrian Normanton, Tony Waye and Bill Bradford, assisted by Nick Tuthill, for organising the tour.
